Two Bridges Hotel, Dartmoor

Sue Stoneman dines on delicious dishes of Devon produce at this country hotel

This charming hotel is in a beautiful spot on Dartmoor, on the banks of the West Dart River near Princetown. The cosy lounge with its warm fires, comfy sofas and armchairs is where we enjoyed a drink, before being shown into the award-winning Tors Restaurant.

A warm welcome awaited us. My partner and I sampled the Dinner Taster Menu. Executive Chef Mike Palmer works his magic in the kitchen to create beautifully presented plates of fabulous tasting food.

While waiting for our dishes, we enjoyed nibbling on a trio of warm freshly-baked bread with basil oil, tapenade and chorizo butter. The first dish to arrive was an artichoke velouté: warm and silky smooth, topped with confit duck, crunchy toasted hazelnuts and truffle oil. We also had the monkfish starter, and the pheasant and beef dishes from the main menu. For dessert, we had a hazelnut topped chocolate parfait and a passion fruit mousse. Tom, our waiter for the evening, looked after us very well, and his recommendation of a glass of red Syrah Grenache complemented every dish.

We tried to pick our favourite or tastiest dish of the evening – neither of us could! Each had its own merits and little twist, from the delicate dumplings that came with the Dartmoor pheasant and the beautifully made ravioli filled with rich Devon Blue Cheese, to the perfectly-cooked tender beef fillet. Not forgetting the more-ish monkfish pakora with accompanying bhaji, spicy masala sauce and mint yoghurt, and the luscious tasting desserts. We couldn’t have scraped our plates any cleaner!
