Review April 2017
The Royal Oak, Meavy

This pub delivers deliciousness in Dartmoor surroundings, says Katy Hanley

This is a traditional pub, serving tempting dishes. Located in a little Dartmoor village (with beautiful views), stopping here could be combined with a cycle ride or a hike in some wonderful scenery. Several family members had already been here and said it was well worth a visit.

For my lunch, I chose the Ploughman’s as it featured appealing local cheeses – Devon Blue, Sharpham Brie and Godminster Cheddar – all of which I enjoyed. The dish came with a couple of hunks of bread, two pickled onions, apple, Devon chutney and a large side salad; all the ‘right’ ingredients for a Ploughman’s. When my husband asked the server for “a good dish”, she replied that all the food was good! He chose the grilled halloumi salad from the Daily Specials board, accompanied by a pint of The Royal Oak’s own-brewed beer.

The pub was busy, although it was a weekday lunchtime – a sure sign that it delivers deliciousness.

Tempted by: Loaded potato skins with baked Camembert, lamb’s liver, bacon, mash, vegetables and gravy, fresh whiting teriyaki, noodles, vegetables and prawn crackers.

Verdict: This Dartmoor pub serves quality home-cooked food with good service, in a glorious location.
