Alex Green dines at this waterside restaurant with its award-winning seafood and killer views
Entering the Salcombe Harbour Hotel and its restaurant, The Jetty, is like stepping on board a laid-back luxury yacht for a cruise along the coast.
The welcoming lobby has all the sailing paraphernalia you’d expect with ropes, barometers, sails and buoys, while old photographs of Salcombe and its people celebrate the history and heritage of this small fishing town.
Inside the waterside restaurant, there are plenty of seating options to suit your mood, with cosy corners tucked away behind the bar, or large tables ideal for family gatherings, or dinner with friends. We sat by the window to enjoy a bit of people watching, as they messed about in boats and enjoyed the sandy coves on the opposite side of the water at East Portlemouth.
We ordered from the set menu with options for two courses (£22.50) or three (£27.50). For starters, I chose the asparagus and white bean hummus with pistachio herb oil, while my partner, Andrew, opted for the seasonal vegetable soup. Both dishes were well portioned and oozing with health-giving greens.
For mains, I had the moules frites, well-seasoned and served just as it would be across the channel. Andrew had the hake, accompanied by crushed potatoes, spinach and samphire: “a beautifully presented dish that tasted of the sea.” The cool, crisp freshness of the Chablis wine was well matched with the fishy flavours too.
To round-off a pleasurable afternoon’s lunch, we moved to the outside deck to enjoy dessert. There’s nothing better than heading out here on a sunny day to drink in some rays – even on a breezy and blustery day!
As the wind picked up, we huddled together under the blankets provided and tucked into an indulgent chocolate fondant to end our delicious meal.
