Home Farm Café

Sue Stoneman goes to the edge of the moors for dinner at Home Farm Café

I had a wonderful dining experience when I revisited the award-winning Home Farm Café just outside Bovey Tracey. It’s a beautiful place to head to for brunch, lunch or dinner – especially after you’ve worked up an appetite from one of the many walks on the National Trust land at Parke, on the fringes of Dartmoor.

The same warm welcome greets visitors, with plenty of space in line with Covid requirements.

We booked to eat dinner inside, and enjoyed relaxing at our table looking out at the twinkling courtyard. Chef Tom Stewart and his kitchen team have created a new menu style offering nibbles, which you can enjoy with a drink to start, followed by a choice of light dishes. They recommend ordering two to three dishes per person, depending on hunger levels. We love this idea – you get to taste plenty from the menu, especially if you’re sharing with your dinner date.

We grazed on all the nibbles while enjoying a drink, then dived into six of the light dishes. These are brought to your table in street market takeaway boxes, so if you don’t manage to eat them all, you simply take them home!

We enjoyed tasty beef tacos, cod goujons, sausages glazed in honey and mustard, chicken satay and some delicious vegetable dishes. Plenty of flavours and textures jumped out of every box. The mango, pea and mint salsa with the cod was a standout favourite. I also enjoyed the pickled apples and crunchy crackling with the sausages. The produce grown in the nearby walled garden is used in some of the dishes, with everything else sourced as locally as possible.

If you don’t have room for Tom’s delicious desserts, don’t worry, order and take them away. They are not to be missed!
