Rosalind Waterfield enjoys interesting flavours and expertly cooked dishes at this historic hotel in Tavistock
Stepping inside The Bedford Hotel, we found a welcoming bar and cosy lounges, and it felt like we had walked into the set of an Agatha Christie novel! I could instantly see why they hold murder mystery weekends here – intrigue and history ooze from every room, corridor and corner.
The attractive restaurant has fresh roses on every candlelit table, and we were met there by our host for the evening Dylan Mulford, who was attentive and looked after us well.
I chose the citrus-cured sea trout to start, served with apple, pine, sorrel and nasturtium. This was an interesting flavour combination that didn’t disappoint. My husband, Gerry, chose the Creedy Carver duck liver parfait, with fig and hibiscus chutney and brioche toast. This came with a delicious selection of bread rolls and a garlic and herb butter with tiny, edible yellow flowers and herbs. If you enjoy garlic, it’s a must-try!
Between courses, we had time to enjoy the view from the window of the beautiful 12th-century church that sits opposite.
My main course was the Howell’s sirloin steak, with chips, onion rings, charred asparagus, a peppercorn sauce and house salad, while Gerry enjoyed the black tiger prawn laksa curry with Nyonya pickled vegetables, udon noodles and a noodle crisp. My perfectly cooked steak was enhanced by the smooth peppercorn sauce. Gerry’s curry was a visual feast – and although he said it was a shame to eat it, he was delighted that it tasted as good as it looked.
Artistically presented desserts ended our dining experience – my Yuzu parfait was refreshing and Gerry enjoyed the twist on the traditional panna cotta flavours of rhubarb and custard.
To summarise our visit, we thoroughly enjoyed the fresh, delicious food, perfectly served by a team that clearly works very hard. The strong emphasis on local, seasonal produce is brought together with flair by this talented team. I can thoroughly recommend a visit to The Bedford Hotel in Tavistock.
