Ben Cole and Charlotte Buckland, Home Farm’s new co-owners, talk about being back in Devon and expanding on the café’s popular offerings
Ben and Charlotte are leading the front of house and kitchen respectively at Home Farm Café. Having grown up in Devon, Ben knew he would return one day, which he did last year with Charlotte and their two children, ready to realise the dream of running their own café. “We met 10 years ago when working together in Brighton, had two kids and shared the dream of bringing up our family in Devon. Escaping the hectic city centre venues and going to work in beautiful surroundings was always a must,” Ben says.
Ben has a hospitality management background, working in pubs, clubs, restaurants, wine bars, and other venues. Charlotte also has experience in pubs and boutique hotels. “I stepped into the kitchen about five years ago with a love of cooking and became a self-taught chef. Moving to Devon has been the best thing for our family. Running our own place has always been the plan, and joining Home Farm means everything to us,” she says.
As owner-operators, Ben and Charlotte are visible in the business most days – bringing their passion for serving great food in welcoming surroundings. “We have an enthusiasm for Devon-grown produce, and recently expanded our brunch, lunch and dinner menus to showcase local, seasonal ingredients but we’re also introducing flavours and influences from our travels. We are lucky to have joined a talented, hardworking team who really care about Home Farm and what we do here,” Ben says.
Customers can expect a broad and exciting range of dishes, but local favourites are still firmly on the menu. “We are definitely keeping our popular cream teas with a selection of fresh home-made scones, along with our Voyager coffee that comes from just up the road in Buckfastleigh,” Ben reassures.
As the seasons change, look out for the new spring and summer menus, which will showcase some beautiful local produce, and the drinks list will also be expanding, including cocktails.
