Sovereign Wines

Proud sponsor of Devon Restaurant Month, Sovereign Wines in Tavistock supplies to restaurants, hotels and pubs across the South West and further afield

Choosing a bootle of wine

Sovereign Wines is an independent merchant supplying high-quality wines to restaurants, hotels and pubs across the South West and beyond. The company imports from around the world and has its own bonded storage, ensuring stock availability.

Working closely with suppliers abroad, Sovereign blends and bottles some of its own wines – La Voile range in particular has enjoyed excellent reviews. All this allows control of costs, and the vast majority of wines are exclusively available in the South West.

The company passionately supports smaller producers, encouraging the production of high-quality wines. Beers and ciders are also available, but only products from the region, with as many spirits as possible also being locally sourced. To minimise carbon footprint, measures such as using paper parcel tape and introducing its first electric van have been introduced.

Owner Michael McGarry explains why the company is performing well, despite global and domestic issues affecting the licensed trade. “We provide a bespoke service, and aim to maximise the potential of every customer, analysing each wine list to ensure the right margins are being made – as well as providing top-quality wine. We take a no-nonsense and honest approach in everything we do and provide as much support as we can – we’ll even provide training to ensure staff understand a wine list and how to promote it.”

There is a free design and print service for customers, ensuring wine lists are attractive and up to date. Deliveries are free, managed by Sovereign’s own fleet of vans in the South West and by couriers nationally. Part of the service involves ensuring wine lists are exclusive – not replicated in neighbouring premises.

The company adapts readily to change – as evidenced by growth despite the pandemic. Customer loyalty is the ultimate accolade. One local restaurateur who moved to West Yorkshire a few years ago, now runs a very large and successful restaurant and still places his weekly wine order with Sovereign Wines.

Summing up why businesses should consider working with Sovereign Wines, Michael says: “Read our reviews! In a word, it’s about communication. We really listen to our customers. We’re big enough to import our own wines, but small enough to provide a personal service. In hospitality, the quality of the service should be as high as the quality of the wine.”
